The Government may give residents in Christchurch's flood-affected areas financial help, after earlier saying it was an issue for the Christchurch City Council.
People living in some suburbs, such as Mairehau, say they have become more vulnerable to flooding since their land subsided in the Canterbury earthquakes.
The Canterbury Earthquake Authority has so far been reluctant to commit to providing flood relief, saying it would need to know each individual's circumstances.
Prime Minister John Key said there will be about 100 homes in need of remediation, and the government will need to work with the Christchurch City Council to decide who pays for it.
Mr Key said it could be that the Earthquake Commission, the city council, and the Government all make a contribution.
