Australian medical neglect risking refugee lives

16:03 pm on 31 January 2018

Amnesty International says Australia's policies of refugee punishment and deterrent will eventually compromise someone's right to life.

Amnesty's Pacific researcher Kate Schuetze says a hunger striking refugee detained by Australia on Papua New Guinea's Manus Island has been moved to a hospital in Port Moresby which cannot provide adequate healthcare.

The diabetic and hypertensive Iranian man has refused food for three weeks in protest over Australia's medical neglect.

Kate Schuetze told Dominic Godfrey Amnesty was alerted to his case on Friday afternoon and she says he needs to be brought to Australia immediately.
