Solomons pushed to develop tourism sector

05:00 am on 18 April 2017

The Solomon Islands government is being asked by the Asian Development Bank to foster the development of the country's tourism industry.

The bank says as the logging industry winds down and with the expected decline in external aid as the Regional Assistance Mission departs the Solomons has to develop more sustainable industries and encouraging more tourists is a logical step.

The sector is tiny at the moment and the legacy of years of ethnic tension at the turn of the century has held it back, but the country's tourism potential has never been in doubt.

Don Wiseman spoke with Auckland University of Technology's New Zealand Tourism Research Institute director, Simon Milne, who says the sector in Solomon Islands has a great future.
