The US has banned exports of firearms to Papua New Guinea because of a rogue gun dealer, says PNG's Police Commissioner.

David Manning said the move would hamper police operations in PNG.

The ban came after a dealer licensed to import high-powered weapons for PNG polices was found to have sold a large quantity to third parties.

Mr Manning, who is also the acting Registrar of Firearms, said the dealer's license had been cancelled for making false declarations.
