The international watchdog group, Human Rights Watch, says the Papua New Guinea Government must protect women accused of practicing sorcery.
Despite sorcery related violence being made a criminal offence nearly ten years ago there have been few cases of perpetrators being brought to trial.
A PNG parliamentary committee that is now sitting has been told that there are well over a million occurrences of gender based violence every year in that country.
And significant number of these are justified with fraudulent claims the victim practised sorcery.
Human Rights Watch Stephanie McLennan told Don Wiseman gender-based violence is a persistent problem in PNG and it's hoping the committee now sitting will lead to a commitment for real change.
