A driver has been injured when his car and a train collided at a West Coast rail crossing, leaving the vehicle extensively damaged.

Police said the male driver was flown to Greymouth Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after the collision at Totara Flat on State Highway 7 between Greymouth and Reefton, about 9.30pm on Wednesday.
