Cook Islands prosecutes DVD pirates

10:33 am on 1 August 2011

The Cook islands high Court has for the first time prosecuted two people who have been charged and convicted under a law relating to DVD piracy.

Robert Hosking and Tashi Tutai were sentenced by Justice Colin Nicholson at the High Court in Rarotonga last week.

The Cook Islands News reports they both faced charges of offering to rent DVDs which had come from New Zealand, Australia and the United States but had not been approved by the chief censor.

The police confiscated 875 DVDs from the pair, after raiding Rarotonga DVD stores late last year, following complaints by a cinema owner about video piracy.

Hosking and Tashi have been fined more than 433 and 520 US dollars respectively and each made to pay court costs.
