The Black Ferns sevens beat Scotland 44-7, Russia 31-nil and England 27-14 to progress to tonight's quarter-finals.

The Black Ferns only had to make the top eight in Biarritz to seal the World Series crown.

New Zealand will face China in tonight's quarter-finals at 10:06pm NZ time.

Captain Sarah Hirini described the day's work as "very pleasing".

"We obviously had some pretty good wins and then also got tested in a couple of areas, which I thought was awesome, because it means that we've still got a lot to work on for day two and we really want to come out firing for that quarterfinal."

Dominant Fury pummels Schwarz in TKO win

English heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury has eased to victory with a second-round technical knockout over Germany's Tom Schwarz in a non-title bout

In his first fight in Las Vegas, Fury showed a destructive edge he has rarely previously demonstrated to justify the significant interest he has generated in the US since his fight with Deontay Wilder.

Fury had perhaps re-established himself as the world's leading heavyweight with December's thrilling draw against American Wilder - when his performance deserved victory - and his reputation grew to such an extent he signed a lucrative contract to fight on ESPN out of the US against an unremarkable opponent.

Concerns persisted that the rounded abilities he traditionally favours over power and strength meant he would win without the sense of drama generated against Wilder and instead effortlessly out-jab Schwarz in the same way he once did Dereck Chisora.

Instead he fought to make a statement and succeeded in doing exactly that, making a typically fast start to highlight the extent of the challenge the 25-year-old Schwarz faced.

And Fury (28-0-1, 20 KOs) battered his previously unbeaten German opponent with a jab before he knocked him down to a knee in the second round right after Schwarz (24-1) landed a big punch.

Fury pressed ahead after the knockdown and forced Schwarz's corner to throw in the towel six second before the bell.

Black Sox claim second win

The Black Sox have taken their second win at the men's softball World Cup in Prague with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Cuba.

Cuban pitcher Guber Quintero pinned the Black Sox hitters down for most of the game giving up just four hits.

2017 world champion Joel Evans was again the difference with a two-run hit in the 2nd innings giving the Black Sox the lead and what would eventually be the final score.

Daniel Chapman threw six complete innings with Josh Pettett closing out the game in the 7th to give the Black Sox the win.

The Cubans, who haven't competed at the world champs since 2013, will take great pride in their achievement of out hitting the Black Sox 7-4.

The Black Sox will take on Mexico in their next game early Monday morning NZ time.

Out-of-sorts Argentina fall to Colombia

Lionel Messi's quest for an elusive first title with Argentina has kicked-off on the wrong foot as the Albiceleste were defeated 2-0 by Colombia in their Copa America opener.

Colombia's Roger Martinez broke the deadlock in the 71st minute at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador, in Brazil's north-east.

Striker Duvan Zapata sealed the result of Saturday's match when he scored on 86 minutes.

A year after the Argentina's World Cup disappointment in Russia, Messi is expected to finally deliver a title to Argentina.

"We have the same hope and desire as we always do, but the truth is that Argentina is going through a change," the 32-year-old national team captain said.

For most of the squad, it is their first major tournament.

Not for Messi, who made his World Cup debut in 2006 and claimed a gold medal with the Olympic team at the 2008 Games.

The other teams in Group B, Paraguay and Asian champions Qatar, as tournament guests, will commence their campaigns on Sunday.

Earlier on Saturday, Venezuela held on for a 0-0 draw with Peru in their Group A opener after the late dismissal of defender Luis Mago.

NRL wins for Eels and Panthers.

Parramatta have stormed into the NRL's top eight with a ruthless 38-10 rout of Brisbane at Bankwest Stadium, with Bronco Matt Gillett suffering a suspected broken nose and Queensland teammate Corey Oates bumbling badly.

The Eels banked five tries amid a 30-minute blitz during Saturday night's opening half, embarrassing the Broncos with a blaze of offloads and brilliant passes.

Meanwhile Penrith have fired a shot across the bow of the rest of the NRL, with a clutch James Maloney field goal giving Ivan Cleary's men a thrilling 19-18 win over South Sydney.

After looking rudderless during the opening months of the season, the Panthers have notched wins over premiership fancies the Rabbitohs and Sydney Roosters in consecutive weeks.

Despite both sides missing some of their biggest stars, confidence is suddenly surging through the Panthers.

Losing eight of their first 10, they have strung together four-straight wins to have the rest of the competition looking over their shoulders.

And on Sunday, Manly's Tom Trbojevic starred in the Sea Eagles' 34-14 demolition of St George Illawarra to seal his return to the NSW State of Origin side.

Des Hasler's side scored 34 unanswered points to inflict further pain on the Dragons. They have lost six of their past seven games to leave them stagnating heading into the representative-round break.

In his second game back from injury, No.1 Trbojevic finished with 333 metres, one try assist, two line breaks, two line-break assists, 11 tackle busts and five offloads.

He looks certain to be named in the NSW side for Origin two as a replacement for injured winger Nick Cotric.
