The capital's World of WearableArt show will go ahead this year after the city council agreed to underwrite the event.

Councillors voted to proceed with the partial underwrite at a closed-door meeting today.

The event was cancelled last year because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Wellington Mayor Andy Foster said the request from event organisers to cover it in case of another lockdown made economic sense.

Foster said the show was a big earner for the city.

"WOW contributes up to $28 million to the city's economy - it is an absolutely key event that especially benefits our hospitality, retail, accommodation and service sectors," he said.

Event organisers have also agreed to keep WOW Wellington-based for the next five years.

The event will be held from 30 September to 17 October.

The financial terms of the underwrite are commercially sensitive.
