Geonet has now revised the reading. It was recorded at a depth of 207km and was felt as far south as Christchurch.

It is unclear at this stage whether it caused damage or injuries. However, Ruapehu District Council says there have been no reports of damage so far.

The Geonet website reported more than 25,000 people had felt it.
