07:18 am on 22 November 2014

Transport Agency engineers will be out on Monday assessing the construction site of a new bridge near Tauranga, after it was badly damaged by fire.

The fire broke out on Thursday night at the bridge in Papamoa which is part of the Tauranga Eastern Link along State Highway Two.

It was estimated to have caused millions of dollars worth of damage and was being treated as arson.

Transport Agency regional spokesperson Harry Wilson said engineers would assess the area before discussing how to dismantle and rebuild damaged parts of the new bridge.
