Campaign to cut power prices launched

The Government has launched a campaign to help people save money on their power bill.

A three-year, $15 million joint venture between the Electricity Authority and the Ministry of Consumer Affairs aims to help households switch to the cheapest electricity retailer.

A new website, whatsmynumber.org.nz, compares power prices and helps people change retailers.

Acting Energy Minister Hekia Parata says the campaign is about encouraging consumers to shop around for the best price.

She says it will also spur retailers to become as competitve as possible and offer better prices.

Ms Parata says the average annual saving for a household that switches to the cheapest power company was estimated to be $150 last year.
