Fiji's interim attorney general says no trial by media

11:11 am on 14 November 2007

Fiji's interim attorney general has cautioned the media and members of the public against trial by media.

Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum was responding to calls by the media, NGO's and political parties for the disclosure of evidence in the case of suspects charged for a conspiracy to assassinate key government figures.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum says such demands are never made when a case is before the courts.

He says Fiji's system of justice is one of trail within the court room, not on television or other media.

The interim attorney general says the judicial system believes in the concept of fair trail without pre-judgment.

To do otherwise, he says, would be to give full reign to a system of kangaroo courts and lynch mobs.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum says discussing evidence at this point would deprive the accused and the prosecution of their constitutional right to a fair trial.
