The centre - which is called the Gig Hub - will act as a shop-front for Dunedin's Gig City project, which is trying to capitalise on being the first city in the Southern Hemisphere to get wide access to giga-bit internet speed.

The hub has a set of long white desks with at least seven types of computer devices with free public access, and a cube-shaped display room for showing videos of city internet-based projects.

Digital Community Trust chairperson John Gallaher said the hub was a free showcase for the Gig City project for residents and visitors, and would enhance the city's main library by connecting it to the world with ultra-fast digital information.
