One dead in Bay of Plenty crash

Police are again urging drivers to take special care around intersections after a man was killed and three people were critically injured in a Bay of Plenty crash.

They said a car turned into the path of a milk tanker and trailer at about 8 am today near the intersection of State Highway 2 and Wilson Road at Paengaroa, east of Te Puke.

Emergency services worked for nearly two hours to free two women and a man who were trapped in the wreckage of the car.

They were flown to hospital by rescue helicopter and are all in a critical condition.

Another man travelling in the car escaped with minor injuries and the truck driver was unhurt.

State Highway 2 near the crash site, has now been reopened. The death takes the holiday road toll to three.
