Coroner looking into circumstances of killing

15:07 pm on 30 May 2011

A coroner is looking into what led to the 2009 murder of a Pukekohe woman, including the supervision that her killer received from Child, Youth and Family.

Tonia Bennett was 16 when she lit a fire in a stairwell, trapping Lynette Chapman in the upstairs area of the house.

Bennett was living in a house supervised by CYF in the same street.

While drinking with an accomplice, she became angry about her former boyfriend, one of Mrs Chapman's three sons.

Last July, Bennett was sentenced to a minimum of 11-and-a-half years in prison. The court noted she had been placed in CYF's care after a troubled upbringing that involved drugs, alcohol and abuse.

The Coroner's Office is collecting information to establish whether a formal inquest is necessary to prevent deaths such as Mrs Chapman's in the future.
