A light quake in Nelson has jolted the South Island, and parts of the lower North Island.

The magnitude 5.0 quake, revised from 4.9, struck at 9.30pm. It was centred 15km south-east of Nelson at a depth of 74km.
More than 8000 people reported feeling the shaking, according to Geonet.
