Surfer dies at Whale Bay near Raglan

Police say a surfer died near Raglan on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to Whale Bay near Raglan at about 2.25pm after a surfer was reported to need medical assistance.

The man was unresponsive when brought ashore by Raglan Surf Life Saving, police said in a statement.

Lifeguards began CPR but the man could not be revived.

The MetService surf forecast for the Raglan coast on Wednesday was for 1.6 metre swell and 2.2m set wave faces.

The death will be referred to the coroner.
