The sportsman pleaded not guilty to possessing and importing methamphetamine in December 2019 and he is due to stand trial later this year.

He was declined continued name suppression by the District Court, but sought to appeal that decision.

In the High Court at Auckland this morning, the man's lawyer, Greg Bradford, said name suppression should continue to preserve his client's fair trial rights.

Crown prosecutor Jessica Pridgeon said there was nothing out of the ordinary in this case and nothing would be jeopardised if he was named.

Justice Edwards reserved her decision.
