Sport: Auckland City close to another OFC final

12:28 pm on 10 April 2017

Auckland City FC is on track for their seventh consecutive appearance in the OFC Champions League football final after defeating AS Tefana 2-0 in the first match of their two-legged semi-final at Stade Pater in Papeete at the weekend.

The New Zealand team dominated possession but were still unable to break through the Tahitian club's defence until the 48th minute.

Cam Howieson seized on a fumbled from Tefana goalkeeper Stevens Hiriga to score after Hiriga had initially done well to save a ball delivered from a corner.

Another attempted clearance from Hiriga set Clayton Lewis up for the second goal of the match in the 75th minute.

In the other semi-final AS Magenta drew 2-all with Team Wellington in New Caledonia.

Midfielder Kevin Nemia put the home team up in the sixth minute and it took almost an hour for Team Wellington to hit back through Tom Jackson, (the man who scored a double to push Wellington past Magenta in the 2016 semi-final).

Team Wellington went on to take the lead through an 81st minute Andy Bevin goal before Nicolas Marin equalised in the closing moments of play through a well-taken spot kick.

The teams will play their second leg of the semi-finals in New Zealand on April 16.
