50% increase in lung cancer patients in Beijing

Smoking and air pollution are blamed for a sharp increase in the number of people with lung cancer in Beijing.

Official figures show the number of lung cancer patients in the Chinese capital is 63.09 per 100,000 people.

Xinhua news agency reported the figures have increased by more than 50%. The agency gave no reason for the increase in patients. It said the figures were issued by the Beijing municipal health bureau.

The BBC reports Chinese people are becoming increasingly worried about the health problems caused by the thick air pollution that often blankets much of the country - a result of rapid economic expansion coupled with poorly enforced laws designed to protect the environment.
