11:26 am on 2 March 2005

Fiji police are reported to have tightened security around a prominent political leader following a death threat made on Monday night.

Fiji TV says an anonymous caller telephoned a police station and said the politician would be assassinated soon.

Assistant Superintendent Kemueli Bulamainaivalu has confirmed the report, adding that police are treating it seriously.

But he has declined to give further details because investigations are still under way.

Police have not named the politician whose assassination has been threatened.

But it is known that police have provided the Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, with three officers for his security.
