A man has been hospitalised after an early morning car chase saw his car go up in flames in South Auckland.
Police went to Hazards Road in Weymouth at 12.25am after reports a man was acting suspiciously.
Officers had to jump out of the way when the man drove towards them.
Police then pursued the vehicle on Weymouth Road and spiked its tyres twice in Manurewa.
The car finally stopped on Wiri Station Road, but caught fire due to the damage it sustained.
The police dog unit assisted in the man's arrest, after he resisted.
A 36-year-old man has been charged with assault and driving offences.
