Bougainville advances referendum preparations

The Bougainville agency charged with preparing the region for a referendum on possible independence from Papua New Guinea, says it is vital the people decide the questions in the vote.

A tentative date of June 15th 2019 has been set for the Bougainville vote and the agency, now called the Bougainville Department of Peace Agreement Implementation, has been established as a stand alone neutral body to prepare the region for the vote and ensure the electoral process is properly in place.

Former Bougainville president James Tanis, who has been heading the department thus far, spoke with Don Wiseman who began by asking him what input the agency has into who can vote and the various options that the voters will get to vote on.
