The lack of adequate toilet facilities in tourist spots north of Saipan is forcing tourists to defecate on beaches and roadsides.

The Northern Marianas Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality, which is tasked with maintaining the Commonwealth's pristine surroundings, says defecation in tourist spots remains a problem.

The Bureau said one of the reasons that tourists continue to defecate in Marpi is because the few toilet facilities available are either locked or out of water.

It has urged the Marianas Visitors Authority to consider placing portable restrooms in these areas for tourists to use.
