PNG Cricket eyes funding boost

A significant funding boost awaits Papua New Guinea's cricketers if they can make an impacy at the World Cricket League two tournament, which begins on Friday night in Dubai.

The Barramundi's open their campaign against Bermuda knowing that a top four finish in the six team comp will secure them an additional US$350 000 funding boost for each of the next two seasons, something Cricket PNG's CEO, Bill Leane, admits is very much at the forefront of their minds.

"Obviously success and finishing in the top four is a really important aspect to this tournament. Now Namibia and UAE, who are competing in this tournament are current recipients of high performance funding, as is Bermuda, as is Uganda. So there are four countries playing in this tournament that are getting that funding at the moment, who will be fiercely defending that right."

The top two ranked teams will also qualify for the inter-continental cup, a tournament for the teams ranked from 11-18 in the world.
