Police have been called to the town of Lincoln, near Christchurch, to investigate an unsubstantiated report of someone with a gun.
They say officers at the scene are confident there is no gun or immediate threat to anyone.
Lincoln High School went into lockdown, and said all students were safe and accounted for.
Around 2pm the school said the lockdown had ended.
Police will remain in the area to investigate the report and reassure people.
