Vanuatu in discussions over removal of bombs from Port Vila Harbour

14:48 pm on 8 October 2013

The Vanuatu Government is reportedly in discussions with New Zealand regarding the disposal of unexploded bombs in Port Vila Harbour.

The Ports and Marine department has told the Vanuatu Daily Post that negotiations are well underway to dispose of five bombs on the harbour floor, discovered in 2010 by divers.

The bombs, thought to be left after the Second World War, are sitting at depths of 14 to 20 metres.

The Daily Post reports the New Zealand Navy visited last year and members viewed the bombs, warning they should be removed but it was risky operation.

Divers say the New Zealand Navy did not receive authorisation to remove the bombs last year.

Concerns were raised when visiting warships dropped their anchors near the bombs, prompting divers to warn them to move.
