People are being encouraged to check their smoke alarms as the clocks go forward an hour tonight for daylight saving.
Daylight saving begins around the country when clocks are put forward an hour at 2am on Sunday morning.
It will then be 3am.
Fire and Emergency has encouraged New Zealanders to check their smoke alarms this weekend when clocks turn forward an hour for daylight saving.
National manager community readiness and recovery Steve Turek said daylight saving was a timely reminder to check your home has working smoke alarms.
"This daylight saving is the perfect time to set five minutes aside and check your smoke alarms are working," he said.
"Just push the button on each of your smoke alarms. If you hear the beep, you know they are ready to protect you and your household. We recommend one in every bedroom, living area and hallway."
Meanwhile, registered psychologist Sara Chatwin is expecting a lift in people's spirits after clocks roll forward this weekend.
Chatwin said changing seasons and temperatures had a major influence on people's frames of mind.
A more restricted social life during the colder months could lead people to feel trapped, she said.
