There is reduced capacity in the pipeline from Marsden Point since a September outage to meet pipeline certification requirements.

Refining NZ said more fuel is flowing now than before the leak but the aftermath is lingering on, aggravated by a false alarm on Sunday that shut the pipeline down for 12 hours.

As a result, all three oil companies have experienced intermittent shortages for a week, and have had to rush in supplies to cope.

A shipload of petrol and diesel arrived this afternoon to meet supply worries in Wellington.

Z Energy says there was no shortage of fuel, just difficulty getting it to where it is needed.
