PNG government advised to ban corrupt officials for life

The Papua New Guinea government has been advised that officials found guilty by the Leadership Tribunal should be banned for life from holding any public office.

The National newspaper reports that this was one of the measures included in the recommendations in the Development Forum at Parliament House.

The life ban proposal has been an ongoing issue in the past two terms of Parliament with leaders resigning to escape the Leadership Tribunal only to be re-elected to face the tribunal again.

The Law, Order and the Justice Sector group that made the recommendations for consideration by the Government has also called on Parliament to give "more teeth" to the Ombudsman Commission.

It's also called for legislative changes, for the Ombudsman Commission to be given the powers to prosecute.

The group wants restitution powers to given to the Leadership Tribunal, to enable it to order the repossession of property belonging to those found guilty of stealing public money.
