Christchurch's Victoria Square will once again be a central city market place in an one-off event to celebrate its reopening.

Victoria Square reopened in March after $7.5 million worth of restoration work was completed.

Three weeks after the square re-opened brass fins, intended to deter skateboarding, were wrenched off, causing more than $100,000 in damages.

On Saturday 7 April it will host a market with about 30 stallholders.

The stallholders have been selected by rebuild organisation, Otakaro Limited, local hapu representative, the Matapopore Charitable Trust, and Felt, an online marketplace.

Matapopore Charitable Trustee, Joseph Hullen, said the square was formerly known as Market Square, and local Māori would come from North Canterbury to sell their produce to European settlers.

"Bringing back a market of locally produced goods gives us an opportunity to appreciate the historic significance of this space."

The market will run from 10am to 1pm.
