The two men, aged 39 and 32, had been on an overnight tramp to Alpha Hut from the Waiohine Gorge on Saturday morning and were due back last night, police said.

They were found dead on a track today, after a family member reported about 7pm yesterday that they were overdue.

Police said one body was found by a member of the public about 10.25am, and search and rescue teams located a second body a short distance away about 1pm.

Both bodies were recovered this afternoon.

Police said weather conditions in the Tararua Ranges were generally good over the weekend, but temperatures had fallen overnight.

They were working to establish the pair's level of experience, and would be investigating the deaths on behalf of the coroner.
