The centre will be the first of its kind in the region and will deliver capacity development programmes in adaptation, mitigation, climate services and project development.

The Director of the Climate Resilience Programme at the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environmental Programme (SPREP), Tagaloa Cooper, said it would be a centre of excellence.

"It will be a home for Pacific Island practitioners - whether it's in the science or traditional knowledge, adaptation. The main themes of the centre are partnership."

The centre was funded by the Japan, Samoa and New Zealand governments and will be hosted at SPREP in Samoa.

It will open during the SPREP and Environment Ministers meeting in early September.
