A man has been taken into custody after fleeing from the police and narrowly avoiding the public in West Auckland this afternoon.
Police said they were attending reports of suspicious activity at a New Lynn address when a vehicle arrived and suddenly fled the area.
The car was signalled to stop near the North-Western Motorway at 2.51pm but failed to do so.
Police said the pursuit was abandoned almost immediately with the police eagle helicopter continuing to monitor the vehicle overhead.
Ground units continued at road speed with information provided from the eagle helicopter.
Police said the vehicle was observed driving erratically on numerous occasions and narrowly avoided members of the public at times.
They said spikes had been deployed successfully on more than one occasion.
The vehicle was then tracked to the Clendon Park area where the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
He was tracked to a nearby street where he was taken into custody.
An investigation is underway.
