Hamilton-Auckland rail link gathers support

15:33 pm on 27 March 2010

More than 10,000 people have signed a petition calling for a commuter rail link between Hamilton and Auckland.

Campaigners want a train service three times a day between the cities, and for Hamilton's underground station to be reopened.

A survey conducted by Hamilton City Council suggests more than 80% of ratepayers are willing to contribute towards getting a commuter service off the ground.

The Campaign For Better Transport will present its petition, along with concept drawings for the defunct underground station, to MPs on Monday.
