Divers have found the body of a swimmer missing in the Whanganui River for a week.

Duane Kaka, who was 34, disappeared while trying to swim across the river which was in flood last Saturday.

Family members spotted the submerged body in the river a week later on Saturday afternoon while on a daily boat search.

Police divers recovered Mr Kaka's body on Sunday morning, about 17 kilometres downstream from where he disappeared.
