About 40-millimetres of torrential rain fell over a 45-minute period from 2.30pm yesterday.

Those affected live on Whatawhata Road between Melva and Newcastle Road.

The Hamilton City Council said power was turned off as a precaution and electrical safety checks are part of an assessment of each property.

Incident Response Controller Andre Chatfield said the residents should be able to get back in tomorrow subject to a final assessment.

Three families will be given temporary accommodation tonight while others are staying with friends or relatives.

The council said the storm water system was simply overwhelmed by the sheer volume of water.
