New Zealand will resume day two of the Test in Mount Maunganui on 258-5.

Sent in to bat, the Black Caps' stand-in skipper Tom Latham was dismissed for one in the fourth over as the New Zealand batters struggled to score early in the innings on Saturday.

In a tough first hour the Black Caps scored just 13 runs as tight bowling from Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam and Ebadot Hossain kept the hosts tied down.

Devon Conway made a solid return to the New Zealand side, after he missed the Test series against India while he recovered from a broken hand suffered during the T20 World Cup.

Conway came in at number three in the batting order to replace regular captain Kane Williamson who will miss the Bangladesh series through injury.

In his seventh Test innings the left-hander scored his second Test century before he was dismissed for 122 caught off the bowling of Mominul Haque in the final session of the day.

Conway combined with opener Will Young for a 138-run partnership over the first two sessions of the day.

Young scored his third Test half-century and was out for 52 just before the tea break.

Veteran Black Caps batter Ross Taylor in his penultimate Test joined Conway at the crease before he fell for 31 as Shoriful Islam claimed his second wicket.

Left-handed batsman and wicketkeeper Henry Nicholls survived the second new ball and will start day two on 31 and will be joined by allrounder Rachin Ravindra in New Zealand's first home Test of their World Test Championship defence.
