Announcement of new Vanuatu police commissioner due by end of May

15:27 pm on 9 May 2006

Vanuatu's Police Service Commission says it will be in a position to announce who the next police commissioner will be by the end of this month.

Vanuatu's Independent newspaper reports that none of the 14 candidates who have applied for the job has as yet been interviewed.

The Public Service Commission and the Ministry of Internal Affairs indicated earlier a decision would have been reached by the end of March.

Vanuatu's police has been led by acting police commissioner, Arthur Caulton, for the past 16 months, amid controversy over whether a local or an expatriate should be appointed.

Meanwhile, the appointment of the first six senior officers into the newly established Vanuatu Correctional Services under the Public Service will go before a special panel that will be appointed soon to list applicants.
