Call for Niue to ban smoking

10:01 am on 27 August 2018

Parliamentarians on Niue have heard calls for the island to go smoke free.

They're debating new anti-smoking legislation, which includes plans to make it illegal for people under the age of 21 to buy cigarettes or tobacco.

There could also be changes in the way the product is sold and advertised.

MP Terry Coe said he would like to see a full island wide ban.

"It's a good aim for us to do and you know we have got to curb all these health problems that the young people are getting so early in life and one of the ways, as I say, is to ban the cigarettes altogether and do it over, say, a five to ten year period," said Terry Coe.
