Police in French Polynesia have detained a 48-year-old man in possession of three types of counterfeit local bank notes.

The newspaper, La Depeche, says about US$10,000 worth of fake bills was found in his home where police had been called over a domestic affair.

The suspect has reportedly said he has not put any of the bills into circulation.

He risks a ten-year jail sentence for distribution and could be imprisoned for 30 years if he is found to have produced the fake money.
