Children found living at meth lab house

19:38 pm on 28 July 2011

Auckland police are working with Child, Youth and Family following the discovery of five children, including an eight-month-old baby, living at a property that had a methamphetamine lab on it.

The lab was uncovered after a fire broke out last weekend in the garage of a Mangere residence causing extensive damage to the garage and a sleepout.

One person was taken to hospital with chest pains but released a short time later.

Detective Senior Sergeant Albie Alexander says it's alarming to hear that five children have been living in such an unsafe and unhealthy environment.

Police have charged a 39-year-old man with the possession of precursor materials and equipment.

Forensic investigators have been on the scene and further charges could be laid.
