Te Arawa kaumatua will decide whether its hapu will take Rotorua Mayor Kevin Winters on a tour of their traditional lands - that could be cut through by a major city road.
Ngati Te Roro o Te Rangi, Ngati Hurunga Te Rangi and Ngati Uenukukopako are opposing the Transport Agency's Rotorua eastern arterial route, which will run from the city airport, close to the edge of Lake Rotorua, towards Sala Street.
On Monday more than 200 of them marched to the Rotorua district council to reinforce their opposition to the plan.
In response, Mr Winters said he was prepared to understand their concerns and suggested he join them and walk the route of the road.
A Ngati Hurunga Te Rangi uri (descendent) Selwyn Insley said the mayor's offer was not well received by some of the group.
He said it's likely elders will decide whether the mayor will be shown around.
