Police on foot have managed to keep pace with a suspected bike thief near the waterfront in Wellington.
A 28-year-old man police believed was riding a stolen bike worth $3000 was arrested after what police described as "a low-speed chase".
Senior Sergeant Mark Lewis of the Wellington police district said police signalled for the man who was riding along Cuba Street to stop about 1.30pm yesterday.
"The man continued riding through the central city, avoiding officers pursuing on foot," Lewis said.
"The chase led to the waterfront, where the man swerved around both police and pedestrians.
"He was eventually tackled by two officers, supported by an off-duty colleague cycling in the area."
He was then arrested without further incident.
He was expected to appear in Wellington District Court today on charges of unlawfully taking a bicycle, receiving property, failing to stop when required and breach of bail.
