Fiji Sawmillers Association seeks court's assistance

12:23 pm on 21 October 2008

The Fiji Sawmillers Association is to seeking the court's assistance to stop rising costs of royalty after talks with Government representatives failed.

The interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, has added fuel to the debate, claiming that figures quoted by the sawmillers were wrong.

Fiji Live quotes the Commodore as saying the Conservator of Forests has indicated to him that the total average increase in royalty rates is 19 per cent and not 56 to 276 per cent as claimed by the association.

The Association has hit back, with its president, Jay Dayal, saying the interim Prime Minister has been misled.

Mr Dayal says they will do whatever it takes them to save their businesses after talks with the Native Land Trust Board and the Forestry Department ended in a deadlock.
