Fiji government stops sub-division development in Ba after complaints

10:00 am on 10 July 2013

The Fiji government has stopped a sub-division development in Ba after squatters complained.

The acting minister for local government, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum, says he was disturbed by threats made to the squatters at the Clopcottt Subdivision in Ba by the regime's special administrator who was trying to clear the site.

Fiji's Ministry of Information says the distressed residents told the minister that the Ba Council had sent earth moving equipment into the area without warning and had begun demolishing their cassava patches and coconut trees.

Mr Sayed Khaiyum told the residents the government is ordering the development be stopped and the project reassessed.
