Suva policing soon to supplemented by City Rangers

16:57 pm on 27 October 2003

Fiji will soon have City Rangers to assist the police in the main city of Suva in controlling criminal offences.

The rangers will also help the Land Transport Authority deal with traffic problems.

The proposal was approved by the Suva City Council, which said law enforcement and traffic issues had become an acute problem due to the ineffectiveness of the police and the LTA.

Suva's Lord Mayor, Chandu Umaria, told the Daily Post that fines for traffic offences would be diverted to help pay for the City Rangers operating costs and would also become a source of revenue for the city.
