Police have released a list of ways to reduce the risk of sexual assault when out partying this summer.

Detective inspector Dave Kirby said sexual assault was never the victim's fault and would not be tolerated in any situation.

"Do not take advantage of vulnerable or intoxicated people and don't allow your mates to do it either ... challenge any inappropriate comments or actions," he said.

When on a night out, Kirby said people should have a charged phone, stick with mates, and never leave drinks unattended.

"Always watch your drink be poured and do not accept drinks from strangers."

He said those planning on drinking should eat a decent meal beforehand, drink plenty of water and think about how they're getting home before going out.

"Have a designated driver or set aside money for a ride home. If you plan to walk, go in pairs or a group."

Kirby wanted parents to take notice of the advice too, so they could pass the information onto their kids.

"Young ones should have access to the information they need to stay safe while having fun."

He reminded people police are here to help, all day, every day.

"We all have a responsibility to ensure our friends and loved ones are safe this summer, so keep an eye out and report any concerns you have."
