The Fijian Elections Office is concerned with the low number of postal vote applications received so far.

FBC News reported that by early Monday the office had received 4,303 applications.

Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem said of the applications received, 4,246 had been approved.

Applications close at 5pm on Wednesday local time.

Meanwhile, as preparations for the December 14 election ramps up, the Fiji Police Force reports increasing vandalism and intimidation.

Commissioner of Police, Sitiveni Qiliho, said the Fiji First Party has been the only target so far with billboards, banners and campaign material on vehicles vandalised.

Qiliho said verbal and physical intimidation of party supporters and hate posts on social media have been increasing.

FBC News reports Qiliho has reminded Fijians that such acts of vandalism, intimidation and political thuggery carry heavy penalties.

Since such acts fall under electoral offences, the Police will collaborate with the Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption to conduct investigations.

NGO wants peaceful transition after election

The Coalition on Human Rights has implored stakeholders and the people of Fiji to engage in a peaceful transition of power upon the election of the next government.

In a statement, the coalition said the election has already fostered greater political participation, with an increase in political parties since 2018.

The NGO said that since the announcement of the 2022 election, political debate and public dialogue has also increased and should be encouraged, but without personal attacks and maligning.

It said Fijians should be able to make a free decision when casting their vote, and a country cannot be truly democratic until its citizens have the opportunity to choose their representatives through elections that are robustly conducted, free and fair.

The coalition said as the results come in on election night, it is equally important that the power bestowed by the will of the people, is respected.
